Our family wants to Thank you all for coming here to celebrate the life of my grandmother, Mary Thompson. You may know her by one of these many names she was also know as, Filomenia Morano, Mary Morano, Lilly, Awmom , Mamie, Mom Mom Winky, Grandmom, Nanny and most important MOM. This will give you a idea of the many and colorful sides of this amazing women. She has been described as a Moms mom, Favorite Aunt, Matriarch ,, but always a Perfect Lady.. Born February 25, 1917 , she was just one of 12 children born into the Morano Family in Philadelphia. The time of the great depression, but there was nothing great about it. It was a time of do with out, a time of sacrifice,a time of being creative with meals , working hard together Playing Harded together, a time of family taking care of family, These all shaped the women she would become. 94 years later, she has 10 of her own children, Freshie, Kathleen, Tommy, Petey, Franny, Joey, Rosemary, Charlie, Johnny and Rick. 25 Grandchildren I am not going to name them., 50 YES 50 not a typo Great grandchildren and 17 Great great Grandchildren. I only got to met in my lifetime 4 of her brothers, three of which greeted her on Monday at the pearly gates, Uncle Francis, Uncle Leo ,Uncle Lawrence ,with a loud HAPPY NEW YEAR. Laughter, singing , hugs and even the mummer strut I am sure could be heard from heaven’s gate as she was joined with so many of our love ones that have gone before, her mom and dad, Aunt Marie, Aunt Mary,Julie, Mark, Frankie, just to name a few. She is survived by her younger brother Joe Morano, he is here with us celebrating her life. He loved his sister Mamie and put her high on a petasal. If you knew Mary at all, you knew she loved children, family and a good strut.. She lite up when a child was in the room. Her faces were priceless. It did not matter whos’ baby , she wanted to see them , hold them , hug them and make them smile. She had a way with kids. She loved kids and kids loved her. My brothers, sisters , cousins and myself love to bring there kids to Awmoms’ ,you always were welcome. The toys she would pull out thru the years ,, anything from pots and pans ,, to small empty comet containers that she let them build with. Green soldiers, cars, The little Irish kids as she would call them who lived around the corner would stop by just to visit. You would catch her waving to every little kid in the Mall. Her bedroom was a bedroom of the little girl at heart that she was, filled with dolls, coaches and doll house , stuff animals, esp bears and baby shoes and of course the blessed mother. In 94 years you create a lot of memories for a lot of people, and some of mine I like to share. BUT before I do , I am asking you to close your eyes and think of your favorite memory with my grandmother… come on close your eyes.. I am sure it will include a smile and a little laugh and her BLUE eyes for me those memiores come crashing thru. Hold on to your memories and share them with someone who has not had the privledge of knowing her, let this be her continued eulogy. Easter Time ..Easter in her Sundays best, she was always in sytle heres another easter lilly , tulip,,, bunny,,, everybody outside to get another picture. Then again every day she was at her best , white hair perfect , shirt, shockings, garters and of course a sweater. She had more sweaters then Macy’s . Every Sunday off to Church , I am sure we were all mention in those prayers. Halloween, putting on a costume and having a ball scaring and getting scared. The kid in her would come out as she like to scare, but hated to be scared. I remember her given my Uncle Tom her fur coat and a gorilla mask , just to scare us.. all the screams and laughter. Locking myself in the bathroom just to get away. Her favorite Holiday was Christmas. Christmas by the tree , come get another picture taken , Homemade gifts, gifts for everyone, the bigger the tree the better, dolls and bears come out to decorate the house The family together. Not sure who was more excited her or the kids waiting for Santa. Spagette Dinners,, we are talking BIG POTS of Spagette and her tomato sauce. Coffee with Carnation milk, conversations around the kitchen table.Family and neighbors stopping by. Making Macronne broth . Her great grandson Chris remembers she made the best Tuna Fish Sandwich, sure there was nothing special about it except the love it was made with,, Uncle Franny remembers chip beef made with hot dogs. Having scramble for dinner. My sister Marianne still wants her potato soup receipt. She had a way of making the most of what she had in her frid. Or ice box as we would call it. Her penmanship , how beautiful she wrote. And she could spell. (always saying anyone can spell) My cousin Maureen spoke how she would look forward to receiving letters from her in College and how perfect her hand writing was and her sense of humor in those letters. The notes you would right to herself on square stickies, everything from what she was doing what you were doing or going to do.,what time you left , what time you came home and her filing system in her shoes. And she wondered why her legs hurted her. I remember in my younger days, my mom taking us by cab, at least the ones that could fit in down to 19th street to see Awmom . The rest my father would push in the coach. What I remember most about these visits was my mom crying as we were leaving. As we sat in the cab and drove off off, mom would say “ Say Good Bye to Awmom” We would scream at the top of lungs GOOD BYEEE all the waydown the street till we did not see her waving on the porch anymore. The woman had a nasty punch,, do not be fooled by her size, if she hit you you knew it. I can see her now,, biting her lip and hold off a blow. If you were teasing her, or doing something you shouldn or trying to make her do something she didn’t want… watch out. As some of her doctors can atest to. Mummer music will always bring back her smile,, the struting the laughing , the dancing till she couldn’t catch her beath and had to sit down. She was a big part of every wedding, birthday, new years, family picnic and holiday. Her sons going into the army , the farewells, the hugs that seem to last forever, the Welcome Home parties. Telling a story out of school , Once she caught Stanley ( who she shared a very close relatioship with as he lives across the street) having a beer party at his mothers house while still in High School and Aunt Kath was not home( yes ST Stanley) She never told on him,, but instant held it over his head , every change she had ,,whispering in his ear ,, I going to tell about that Kool Aid party…and can’t you just see that smirk on her face One of my favorite memories was a trip to Wildwood New Jersey, She would come to the beach , fully dresses , Skirt , stocking, garters, sweater and pocketbook , sunglasses and sit on the chair , just watching everyone like the princess . One night on the boardwalk, I talked her into going on a ride with me, I was about 9 y/o . It was the Golden Nugget , I told her it was a slow train ride thru a Western town.. On we went. Only to find it was a roller coaster in the dark… She Screamed, yelled, punched, pulled my hair and laughed thru the whole ride. We got off the ride and she could not stop laughing, hitting me , calling me a crazy nut.. ( which was one of her favorite sayings Right Charlie )..I love to see and hear her laugh so hard. I see this as her life, with all its up s and downs ,, she rode roller coaster of life screaming , laughing , punching and fighting to the end and now that’s its over she is smiling and laughing, calling us crazy nuts, because she enjoyed every min of the thrill of the ride. Life has been good to her ,, and she has been good to us I need to share two memories Rick and Rose shared with me. Awmom job in the morning was getting Rose ready to get out the door and ready for work. Does this match this ,, does this match this??Rose remembers how Awmom would help her by taking everything out of one pocketbook and put it in another to match Rose’s outfit for that given day. Once Rose got to work, heaven forbid if everything wasn’t in that new purse. Rose would call her on the phone and well lets just say , I can’t repeat what was said on that phone call, here in church Rick recalls losing his ID badge, a much needed item as a police office. He looked high and low for days . looking throught out the house with no luck. One day he found Awmom in the food court at the Mall having a conversation with a complete stranger and without shipping a beat out came Ricks ID badge from her pocketbook as she showed the stranger the picture of her son in uniform. Thank god there was a stranger there that day. I love these two stories , because they show the Servandue, pride and love she had for her family. How she lived for her family, pressing cloths, switching pocketbooks, no matter what your age , you were always her child. See this 5 dollars ,, Awmon gave it to me 11 years ago, I was 44 rolled it shoved it into my hand and said here take it. I saved it all this time behind a picture I have of her, to remind me of the kind of loving given grandmother I had. I remember lines of blue police shirts pressed and strached ..Her children can remember in Grade school the nuns would say you must be a Thompson, Strached Shirt, Combed hair and looking immaculate. A trait she passed on to my mother. I would be remissed if I did not mention at this time all that Rick and Rose have done for Awmom. On more then one occasion, her Doctor , Dr Lansbach said, if I ever get sick I want the two of you taking care of me. They put their lives on hold to take care of her. Some would say , she was their life. Rick and Rose may not have seen eye to eye on everything, but NOTHING stood in the way of given Awmom the care she needed. From blending food, to changing her, bathing, washing and brushing her hair and a list that goes on and on.. to just sitting with her and holding her hand and talking with her… Come on Babydoll , open your eyes. Want to go shopping ?? Hey MOM .. you are a good girl these would be echoed and be repeated thru the house, hospital and day You may be surprised and ask why do ALL this when she doesn’t know who you are… the answer is simple.. She may not have known who they were, BUT they knew who she was. .their MOM, That is the kind of uncondional love I want in my life and my family. They taught me to NEVER give up.. For this we THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts, Rick and Rose, we are forever grateful. Awmom grow up in a generation where, I’m sorry, I’m mad ,I’m Hurt I love you were seldom heard, if ever. Although we did not hear those words often from her lips , we saw them in her Crystal BLUE eyes… She could not hide what she was feeling. You saw the emotion in those beautiful blue eyes, you saw pain ,joy , hurt ,laughter , sometimes scared., but mostly LOVE I see those same feelings in the eyes of small children, their eyes say I’m sorry, I’m mad, I’m hurt ,, and I LOVE YOU without saying a word …. So every time I look into the eyes of a small child and see that smile,, I will think of my grandmother and hear her say in her way ,, I love you. WE love you, Mom .Lilly, Awmom,Mamie, Mom Mom Winky, Grandmom, Nanny thank you for being such a PERFECT LADY
